Employer are required to pay Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) to employees for periods of absence between four days and 28 weeks.  Currently the basic rate of payment is £68.20 per week.   Details of this scheme are given on the Inland Revenue link opposite.

There is no further requirement upon employers to make sick payments to employees.  However most employers pay their staff full salary for the first four days of absence.  They will also make up SSP to full salary for a set period of time, normally depending upon length of service.

Employers should have a written policy on sick pay that is communicated to all staff.  Our suggestion for such a policy is given in the Policy section indexed opposite.
