Step 1 Identify the hazard

Step 2 Work processes
What is special about this location and the people concerned?
Are there large numbers of people to be evacuated?
Are there disabled or elderly people in that group?
Is there any electrical equipment subject to damp or water?
Step 3 Evaluate the risks
Are existing fire safety measures adequate?
Are sources of ignition/ fuel controlled?
Is the fire warning system effective even if the power fails?
Is there effective emergency lighting?
Has the emergency warning system been tested?
Do all employees know what to do in case of fire?
Are there adequate fire extinguishers and do staff know how to use them?
Is the means of escape adequate for the maximum likely number and clearly marked?
Do employees understand the need to maintain the means of escape?
Is it the means of escape clear to the audience?
Step 4 Record findings on the Risk Assessment form
Complete hazard assessment form.
Inform, instruct and train employees.
Step 5 Revise if circumstance change
Has the nature/ size of the audience changed (e.g. more young people)?
Have the performers brought different equipment into the venue?
Has the seating layout changed?
