Fire safety an employers' guide (Home Office)

Various Health and Safety regulations concern the use of equipment at work.  The catch all regulations are the Use of Work Equipment Regulations.  These require employers to ensure all work equipment is is suitable for the intended use; safe for use, maintained in a safe condition and, in certain circumstances, inspected to ensure

this remains the case.  It also requires users to have been given adequate training, instruction and safety equipment to ensure its safe use.

The key words are that all equipment (including mobile equipment) must be:

  • Maintained in a safe condition;

  • Inspected before use.

Specific requirements apply to some equipment such as lifting equipment, cranes, air receivers, fork lifts and dumper trucks.
