Part-time workers Regulations

The youngest age your child can work is 13 years old. There are a few exceptions e.g. stage or television work (see link opposite).

Children aged between 13 and 15 may not work:

  • Without an employment permit issued by the local education authority.

  • In any industrial setting e.g. factory, industrial site etc 

  • During school hours.

  • Before 7am or after 7pm. 

  • For more than one hour before school. 

  • For more than four hours without taking a break of at least one hour. 

  • Without having a two week break from any work during the school holidays in each calendar year.

During school term, no more than:

  • Two hours on Sundays.

  • 5 hours on Saturdays (13-14 year olds).

  • 8 hours on Saturdays (15-16 years olds).

  • 12 hours per week.

During school holidays, no more than:

  • Two hours on Sundays.

  • For 13-14 year olds,  25 hours per week.

  • For 13-14 year olds, a  maximum of 5 hours per day (Mon - Sat)

  • For 15-16  year olds 35 hours per week.

  • For 15-16  year olds 8 hours on weekdays and Saturdays.
